Frequently Asked Questions
Is every Montessori school the same?
Montessori schools are all independent from one another. The difference is in the teacher training and certification of the school. Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) was founded by Dr. Montessori many years ago to protect the integrity of her work.
Garden City Montessori is unique as it is the only authentic Montessori school in North Hertfordshire. Upholding AMI standards, GCM maintains the level of excellence Dr. Maria Montessori envisioned.
Why do Montessori group mixed ages together?
When younger children enter the classroom they have the opportunity to observe older children. The older children serve as role models and mentors for the younger children, in an environment where children are respecting one another and exhibit the grace, courtesy and social skills to build a strong, stable community.
What is the difference between Montessori and Traditional education?
Montessori represents and entirely different approach to education.
Montessori emphasises learning through all five senses – not just through listening, watching or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own individual pace and learning is an exciting process of discovery – leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. Children are not required to sit and listen to a teacher talk to them as a group, but are engaged in individual or group activities of their own, with materials they have been introduced to.
Montessori classes place children in 3 year age groups, (0-3, 3-6, 6-9 9-12 and so on), where the older children freely share their knowledge with the younger ones.
Is Montessori suited to children with learning difficulties?
Montessori is designed to help all children reach their fullest potential at their own unique pace. A classroom whose children have varying abilities is a community in which everyone learns from one another. The mixed aged classroom allows each child to find his or her own pace without feeling ‘ahead’ or ‘behind’ in relation to peers.
